Sony introduces new X line headlined by Snapdragon 820 powered ‘X Performance’

If you thought LG and Samsung were going to be the only ones announcing flagship phones, you might be pleasantly surprised by Sony’s press conference today. On the first official day of Mobile World Congress 2016, Sony took to the press to unveil its newest lineup of phones, the new Xperia X line. The X lineup will be headlined by three phones, the XA, X, and X Performance, which is the most powerful of the three.

Sony Xperia X Performance

Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 820

Screen: 5″ FHD 1080p display

Operating System: Android 6.0 Marshmallow

Storage: 32 GB (expandable)

Memory: 3 GB

Main Camera: 23 MP

Front Camera: 13 MP

Battery: 2,700 mAh

Well, this one may be a bit of a shocker. We’ve heard little to no leaks about a new flagship from Sony debuting at MWC2016, and yet here it is. The Sony X Performance is headlined by the newest and fastest chip from Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 820. What I find most interesting here is that Sony has decided on a 5-inch 1080P display for the X Performance. The decision to go with a 1080P screen over a 2K (2560 x 1440) screen, like Samsung and LG have done with their flagships, will help with performance and battery life, but could be seen as a missed selling point. The battery life is rated at two days between the 2,7000 mAh battery, Android 6.0’s Doze and other new software features that Sony is baking into the OS.

Sony Xperia X

Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 650

Screen: 5″ FHD 1080p

Operating System: Android 6.0 Marshmallow

Storage: 32 GB/64 GB (expandable)

Memory: 3 GB

Main Camera: 23 MP

Front Camera: 13 MP

Battery: 2,620 mAh

There doesn’t seem to be a ton to differentiate the Sony Xperia X from the Sony Xperia X Performance other than the processor. The Xperia X still has the very respectable and zippy Qualcomm Snapdragon 650 processor in it. It looks like it will come in two options: single and dual SIM card. The single SIM card version of the phone will come with 32 GB of storage standard (expandable with a micro sd card), while the dual SIM card version will come with 64 GB of storage (also expandable). The battery is also slightly smaller than the X Performance, coming in at 2,620 mAh instead of 2,700 mAh.

Sony Xperia XA

Processor: MediaTek MT6755

Screen: 5″ 720p

Operating System: Android 6.0 Marshmallow

Storage: 16 GB (expandable)

Memory: 2 GB

Main Camera: 13 MP

Front Camera: 8 MP

Battery: 2,300 mAh

The new Xperia X lineup is rounded out with the Xperia XA. The lowest spec’ed of the three phones, we expect to see this come in at the best price point. While the camera is bumped down to 13 MP here, it’s still a Sony camera, so great pictures are still expected. The paltry 16 GB of storage is saved by being expandable with a micro sd card, just like its big brothers. Sony has decided to go with the MediaTek MT6755 processor here, which is an octa-core chip with its  ARM Cortex-A53 CPU.
