Super Mario Run Updated With New Courses, Price Drop to $5

Super Mario Run, one of the most hyped mobile games of all time, received a major update this week that includes new maps, a new character to unlock, plus a drop in its price.
The group of new maps is called Remix 10, which consists of randomly generated mini maps. In these maps you collect Rainbow Coins that you can use for other things in the game, and at the end of the new areas, you can unlock Princess Daisy as a playable character. You do not need to own the game to access these maps, but you will need to spend in-game tickets.
The big part of this update, though, is the price drop. The game launched for $10, but possibly forever or for at least a limited time, you can buy it for $4.99. That’s 50% off, which is pretty sweet.
If you’ve been waiting for a price drop or you need some Princess Daisy in your life, go get it!

Nebula Capsule is a Compact Projector With 360° Speaker Powered by Android

The crowdfunding ecosystem has given us a few gems from time to time, but for the most part, we try to stay away from it. There’s simply too many horror stories. However, Anker, an established company well known in the electronics industry, has a new product up on Indiegogo, one that we think is actually pretty sweet.
Made by Nebula, a branch of Anker, the device is called Capsule. It’s a compact pico projector, about the size of a soda can. While pico projectors aren’t all that exciting, this one features a 360-degree speaker, Bluetooth connectivity, and comes with Android 7.0+ out of the box. It’s a Smart Bluetooth video projector, to sum it up nicely.

According to the Indiegogo listing, “Nebula Capsule delivers up to 2.5 hours of continuous video or 40 hours of non-stop music on a single charge. That’s quite a bit of music bumping or video watching. Additionally, Capsule has Quick Charging equipped, meaning it charges quickly once depleted.
With Android “Nougat” installed, you simply download your apps, project them, or utilize WiFi connectivity, HDMI input, and USB OTG to connect to virtually any device to display whatever you want.
For pricing, all of the cheap early bird specials are gone, but there are still perks available that get you a discount. As of right now, the least expensive is $249, which is 28% off the final price. Shipments are expected to go out in December and it looks like they’re shooting for Christmas time. Anker set a goal of $50,000, but backers have already shot way past that with the project sitting at around $140K at this moment.
Watch the video below, then follow the link to Indiegogo to learn more.

Pimp your smartphone with this new wallpaper app

Fondo is a new app on the market offering 4K wallpapers for your Android smartphone. Sure, there are a number of them already available, but what makes Fondo different is that all of its wallpapers are made in-house by the company’s team of designers.
There are a number of them to choose from, which you can sort by categories including abstract, typography, landscape, pattern, and minimal, just to name a few. Most are free, but there are also a few premium collections on offer with each containing between 20 and 30 wallpapers that you can unlock for a few bucks — Fondo Pro.

Live wallpapers aren't quite the draw that they used to be. Once fancied as "one of the features Apple products don't have", it's since fallen into obscurity a bit. That isn't to say that live …
I have downloaded the app and took a closer look at what it has to offer, and I must say I like what I see. A lot of the wallpapers are gorgeous and unique, while the app is nicely designed and simple to use. You can browse the most popular options available as well as create a list of your favorite wallpapers, so you’ll have all of them in one place — check out a few of the ones I like below.

Google Slides gets Keep integration, add-on support, and more with latest update

Google has added a bunch of new features to Slides for G Suite customers. The biggest one is support for add-ons that allows you to build better presentations.
There are seven integrations available at the moment with services including Adobe Stock and Shutterstock — more are coming at a later date. With Shutterstock’s add-on, for example, you can find royalty-free images and quickly add them into your presentation without leaving Slides’ interface.
Another great addition is the new drag-and-drop integration between Keep and Slides. What this means is that you can now just drag notes from Keep into your presentation, so there’s no need to type in the data manually anymore. Check out what this looks like in action below.

Other new features worth mentioning include “Linked slides” that allow you to sync slides from multiple presentations with a single click, and “Skip slide”, which you can use to skip select slides without fully deleting them when you present from your phone or laptop.

Have you tried out the new features yet? Let us know what you think of them in the comments.

Nanoleaf Aurora is a Dope Lighting System, Works With Alexa and Google Assistant

Nanoleaf Aurora DL DogeThere is no shortage of “smart” lighting systems on the market these days, but from what I can tell, there are a few that stand well above the rest. I recently set up a Nanoleaf Aurora system in my office, and let me tell you, it’s magical.
If you’re unfamiliar, the Aurora system is made up of triangular LED panels that attach to each other, easily mountable to your wall via accompanied Command strips. You can make basically any shape you want, bend it around corners, and really let your imagination flow freely when setting it up. Just looking through Nanoleaf’s Instagram page really inspired me. Once everything is installed, there is a single app to control the colors and effects you see, but what’s killer about Nanoleaf’s product, it works with Amazon Alexa and Google Home.
With support for those services, you can control the system via your voice. For example, “Hey Alexa, Turn on Aurora,” and your lights will turn on. You can also set up commands for setting different lighting effects, too. Instructions on how to set up your voice commands are found on Nanoleaf’s website (Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa).
Here’s my Droid Life Doge shape, killin’ the game.

Nanoleaf App
There is a single app controlling the system, downloadable for both iOS and Android. Inside, you pair your Aurora or any other Nanoleaf fixture to your WiFi, then get to work on creating scenes for your system, which is pretty straightforward. You can choose colors based on a certain palette or can work with a color wheel, customizing each individual panel to how you want it.

The app is where you program the desired effects, too. You will find options such as Flow, Wheel, Burst, and Fade, as well as preset color choices for you to play with. If you like a certain aspect of a preset, but want to change the colors, you can long press on any preset to edit it.
You can grab the app by following the link below.
Play Link
Aurora Rhythm
Rhythm is an accessory launched just this week for the Aurora system, and basically, it works like magic. It’s a simple extension you plug into your installed system, which turns any sound/music playing in a room into an insane light show for your enjoyment. There’s no programming needed to set it up. Once plugged in, press the single button it has and you’re good to go.

Inside of the Nanoleaf app you can program scenes for Rhythm, just in case you don’t want a constant barrage of different colors. You can set a wave or ripple effect, then also program the colors which are shown. If you have your lights set up in a particular order, and not just a dog shape like I have, you can get some crazy looking effects.
Pricing
The entry package for Aurora consists of 9 LED panels, with the price varying at retailers. Amazon has it on Prime for just $180, while Best Buy has it for $188. Additional panels can be purchased in 3-packs, priced at $60 a pop. This means that if you want a really big design to go up, it’s a pricey system. From my experience, the 9 panels that the starter kit has is sufficient, but I would like to recreate the DL logo on my wall, which means I’ll probably need to pick up just a few more panels to make it look right.
That’s another thing, though. Because the box comes with Command strips, please be careful when removing this system from your wall to make new shapes or move it to another room. Depending on your room’s paint, these strips are strong enough to take the paint with it. Just be extremely careful during the removal process — slow and steady.
As for the Rhythm accessory, it is priced at $50, available via Nanoleaf’s store.

Why are smartphone chips suddenly including an AI processor?

If virtual assistants have been the breakthrough technology in this year’s smartphone software, then the AI processor is surely the equivalent on the hardware side.
Apple has taken to calling its latest SoC the A11 Bionic on account of its new AI “Neural Engine”. Huawei’s latest Kirin 970 boasts a dedicated Neural Processing Unit (NPU) and is billing its upcoming Mate 10 as a “real AI phone“. Samsung’s next Exynos SoC is rumored to feature a dedicated AI chip too.
Qualcomm has actually been ahead of the curve since opening up the Hexagon DSP (digital signal processor) inside its Snapdragon flagships to heterogeneous compute and neural networking SDKs a couple of generations ago. Intel, Nvidia, and others are all working on their own artificial intelligence processing products too. The race is well and truly on.
There are some good reasons for including these additional processors inside today’s smartphone SoCs. Demand for real-time voice processing and image recognition is growing fast. However, as usual, there’s a lot of marketing nonsense being thrown around, which we’ll have to decipher.
aiSee also: related articleFacial recognition technology explained

More and more smartphones now come equipped with facial recognition security, offering up a new way for us all to secure and unlock our smartphones. While not as widespread and not necessarily more secure than …
AI brain chips, really?
Companies would love us to believe that they’ve developed a chip smart enough to think on its own or one that can imitate the human brain, but even today’s cutting edge lab projects aren’t that close. In a commercial smartphone, the idea is simply fanciful. The reality is a little more boring. These new processor designs are simply making software tasks such as machine learning more efficient.
These new processor designs are simply making software tasks such as machine learning more efficient.
There’s an important difference between artificial intelligence and machine learning that’s worth distinguishing. AI is a very broad concept used to describe machines that can “think like humans” or that have some form of artificial brain with capabilities that closely resemble our own.
Machine learning is not unrelated, but only encapsulates computer programs that are designed to process data and make decisions based on the results, and even learn from results to inform future decisions.
Neural networks are computer systems designed to help machine learning applications sort through data, enabling computers to classify data in ways similar to humans. This includes processes like picking out landmarks in a picture or identifying the make and color of a car. Neural networks and machine learning are smart, but they’re definitely not sentient intelligence.
When it comes to talk of AI, marketing departments are attaching a more common parlance to a new area of technology that makes it harder to explain. It’s equally as much an effort to differentiate themselves from their competitors too. Either way, what all of these companies have in common is that they’re simply implementing a new component into their SoCs that improves the performance and efficiency of tasks that we now associate with smart or AI assistants. These improvements mainly concern voice and image recognition, but there are other use cases, too.

New types of computing
Perhaps the biggest question yet to answer is: why are companies suddenly including these components? What does their inclusion make it easier to do? Why now?
You may have noticed a recent increase in chatter about Neural Networks, Machine Learning, and Heterogeneous Computing. These are all tied into emerging use cases for smartphone users, and across a broader range of fields. For users, these technologies are helping to empower new user experiences with enhanced audio, image and voice processing, human activity prediction, language processing, speeding up database search results, and enhanced data encryption, among others.
See also: related articleWhat is machine learning?

One area of technology that is helping improve the services that we use on our smartphones, and on the web, is machine learning. Sometimes, the terms machine learning and artificial intelligence get used as synonyms, …
One of the questions still yet to be answered is whether computing these results is best done in the cloud or on the device, though. Despite what one OEM or another says is better, it’s more likely to depend on the exact task being calculated. Either way, these use cases require some new and complicated approaches to computing, which most of today’s general 64-bit CPUs aren’t particularly well suited to dealing with. 8- and 16-bit floating point math, pattern matching, database/key lookup, bit-field manipulation, and highly parallel processing, are just some examples that can be done faster on dedicated hardware than on a general purpose CPU.
To accommodate the growth of these new use cases, it makes more sense to design a custom processor that’s better at these type of tasks rather than have them run poorly on traditional hardware. There’s definitely an element of future proofing in these chips too. Adding in an AI processor early will give developers a baseline on which they can target new software.

Efficiency is the key
It’s worth noting that these new chips aren’t just about providing more computational power. They’re also being built to increase efficiency in three main areas: size, computation, and energy.
Today’s high-end SoCs pack in a ton of components, ranging from display drivers to modems. These parts have to fit into a small package and limited power budget, without breaking the bank (see Moore’s Law for more information). SoC designers have to stick to these rules when introducing new neural net processing capabilities too.
A dedicated AI processor in a smartphone SoC is designed around area, computational, and power efficiency for a certain subset of mathematical tasks.
It’s possible that smartphone chip designers could build larger, more powerful CPU cores to better handle machine learning tasks. However, that would significantly bulk up the size of the cores, taking up considerable die size given today’s octa-core setups, and make them much more expensive to produce. Not to mention that this would also greatly increase their power requirements, something that there simply isn’t a budget for in sub-5W TDP smartphones.
Heterogeneous Compute is all about assigning the most efficient processor to the task most suited for it, and an AI processor, HPU, or DSP are all good at Machine Learning math.
Instead, it’s much more astute to design a single dedicated component of its own, something that can handle a specific set of tasks very efficiently. We have seen this many times over the course of processor development, from the optional floating point units in early CPUs to the Hexagon DSPs inside Qualcomm’s higher-end SoCs. DSPs have fallen in and out of use across audio, automotive, and other markets over the years, due to the ebb and flow of computational power versus cost and power efficiency. The low power and heavy data crunching requirements of machine learning in the mobile space is now helping to revive demand.
An extra processor dedicated to complex math and data sorting algorithms is only going to help devices crunch numbers better.
Wrap Up
It’s not cynical to question whether companies are being really accurate with their portrayal of neural networking and AI processors. However, the addition of an extra processor dedicated to complex math and data sorting algorithms is only going to help smartphones, and other pieces of technology, crunch numbers better and enable a variety of new useful technologies, from automatic image enhancement to faster video library searches.
As much as companies may tout virtual assistants and the inclusion of an AI processor as making your phone smarter, we’re nowhere near seeing true intelligence inside our smartphones. That being said, these new technologies combined with emerging machine learning tools are going to make our phone even more useful than ever before, so definitely watch this space.

LG V30 Lets Us Know How the Pixel 2 XL Will Compare to Other Flagships

lg v30 vs pixelThe LG V30 will finally go on sale in the US next week, but at almost the same exact time, we’ll get our first official look at Google’s new Pixel 2 XL. That’s worth noting since the Pixel 2 XL is a phone we believe to be similar in specs and design to LG’s latest. And we believe that because we know LG made the Pixel 2 XL and is thought to have used the same 6-inch POLED display. So we thought since the V30 is ultimately the closest thing to a Pixel 2 XL brother, you might wonder how it compares to the rest of the big Android flagships of the moment.
Below, you’ll see the LG V30 up against the Pixel XL, Nexus 6P, Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, as well as the Essential Phone. Up top, you can also see how the V30 compares to the Pixel. This is a basic size comparison, but visually it should help most of you figure out how big the Pixel 2 XL is when in your hand, assuming you own one of the phones featured here.
What I find fascinating is how small these phones are starting to become, thanks to the big displays with little bezel. Remember, the LG V30 has a 6-inch QHD POLED display, yet it’s almost the same size as the regular Pixel, which has a 5-inch display. But that difference only becomes more comical when you put it up against the Pixel XL (5.5-inch) and Nexus 6P (5.7-inch). Boy, have we come a long way in terms of phone design.
So if you were looking to see how the Pixel 2 XL compares to your phone or others on the market, we’ve basically given that to you below.

The revived Nokia 3310 will soon work in the US with new 3G support

Before anyone starts asking in the comments; yes, we know the Nokia 3310 is not an Android phone. However, we still think that HMD Global was very smart to relaunch a new version of this classic mobile handset alongside its other Android Nokia-branded smartphones and we cannot resist writing about it. Many people still have a lot of warm feelings for the original Nokia 3310, and the new edition that was first announced in February at MWC 2017 is an almost perfect replica of that older mobile phone.
See also: related articleA week with the Nokia 3310 reminds me how far phones have come

I've had the pleasure of spending the last week or so getting to know the new Nokia 3310, the company's latest feature phone designed in the spirit of the much beloved original 3310 from the turn …
This week, HMD Global announced that it would launch yet another version of the Nokia 3310. In addition to being slightly bigger, the new version will have one important addition inside; 3G cellular hardware. That means this version can be used on some US carriers; specifically GSM networks like T-Mobile and AT&T (sorry, Verizon and Sprint users). Because of the new hardware, owners will get up to 6.5 hours of talk time on a single charge when it is being used on a 3G network, well below the 22 hours for the previous 2G edition.

The newest edition of the Nokia 3310 will also get some changes in its user interface, so owners can change the icon colors and positions (don’t worry, it’s still able to play Snake). Finally, in addition to Yellow and Warm Red colors, the phone will be sold in Azure and Charcoal color options, along with silver keypads with buttons that have been given more space between each other, so owners can have a better dialing and texting experience.
The 3G edition of the Nokia 3310 will go on sale in mid-October for the price of €69, or about $81. There’s no word on if any US carriers will sell the phone, but we would bet that lots of folks in this country would love to get their hands on it for a piece of nostalgia.

Ported Google Camera with HDR+ gets RAW support and squashes major bugs

The modified version of the Google Camera app caused a few ripples in the Android community because it allowed those who don’t own Pixel or Nexus devices to try out Google‘s excellent HDR+ chops, among other features. Thankfully for fans, independent developer B-S-G did not stop his work on the modified app and released a new version that adds RAW support, squashes some major bugs, and throws in a few features along the way.
With the update, the ported Google Camera HDR+ app can enable RAW capture while saving the JPEG file. RAW support might not be significant for most folks, but it allows others to use their computers for additional processing and fine-tuning as they see fit. It also allows you to use HDR+ and bypass the processing that happens after snapping a picture.

The Google app has seen a lot of updates so far this year. The familiar card layout has had some visual flair added to it and more and more content seems to be packed in …
The updated port also allows you to configure the processing modes for HDR+. Keep in mind that you will need to completely close the application and open it for the changes to go into effect. There are also certain combinations that will not work well with each other, so just play around with the settings and see what works.

Finally, overall speed and stability have supposedly been significantly improved with Google Camera HDR+.
Alas, the list of devices confirmed to work with the app is not very extensive, but includes the following:

LG G6
OnePlus 3/3T
OnePlus 5
Samsung Galaxy S8 (Snapdragon)
Xiaomi Mi 5S
LG V20
Essential Phone

Other devices, such as the Nokia 6 and Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, should work with the app, since they support the Camera2 API. The list should increase over time, but as of now, it’s a wait-and-see approach.
If you want to give the updated Google Camera HDR+ a spin, head to Android FileHost to download it.

The Google app now lets you pin a few categories to your home screen as icons

The Google app has seen a lot of updates so far this year. The familiar card layout has had some visual flair added to it and more and more content seems to be packed in every time you open it. Now, Google is making it a little bit easier to get to your favorite categories. Some users with Google App version 7.11 or 7.12 beta are now able to place icons on their home screen for the Dining, Entertainment, and Sports categories.
To add these icons, all you’ll need to do is swipe left to Google Now on the Pixel Launcher or open up the Google App. Once there, click on the desired category under the search bar. Somewhere in the list, you’ll be asked if you would like to add a shortcut to your home screen. If you’ve previously added a shortcut to Google’s weather forecast to your home screen, you’ll be familiar with the process.

So far, only three categories will query you. The Dining icon will perform a local search for restaurants around you, while the Entertainment and Sports icons take you back to those categories in the app. There isn’t anything necessarily special about the icons, they just return you to a category within the Google app. You can move them, put them in a folder, or delete them. I might keep them around because they make me more aware that I have options before scrolling endlessly through Reddit or Facebook.
If you’re not seeing the option to add them yet, don’t fret. It appears that not everyone with the latest Google App has the ability to add them just yet.  It looks like this is a server-side switch that Google has to throw. Once you have the ability, will you add them to your home screen? Let us know down in the comments.
The Google app now lets you pin a few categories to your home screen as icons

Check out this new, sort of creepy teaser for the Huawei Mate 10

According to the video, the upcoming flagship from Huawei is “not a smartphone.” It also says the device will be so smart that it’ll “think for us.”

In this post, which will be updated regularly, we take a closer look at the latest rumors surrounding the upcoming Huawei Mate 10 series.
The Huawei Mate 9 is a great device that hasn’t quite grabbed …
As we approach October 16, we are learning more about the upcoming Mate 10-branded smartphones day by day. So far, we’ve seen what seemed like leaked slideshows, purportedly showing images of the Mate 10 and the Mate 10 Pro. Rumors suggest that the Pro version could sport a bezel-less design, 4,000 mAh battery, all-new camera sensors, and of course, advanced AI features.
The AI part is where things get interesting. The Chinese electronics giant has previously stated that its upcoming flagship – presumably called the Mate 10 – will be “more powerful” than the recently-released iPhones. It even made fun of the Face ID technology found inside the iPhone X, claiming that the Mate 10 will be the “real AI smartphone.” These are certainly bold claims, but one thing is for sure: Huawei is not taking AI lightly. The company has already discussed its plans to launch an application processor that combines CPU, GPU, and AI functions, and although it’s unclear whether that’ll debut with the Mate 10, from the latest teaser, it’s clear AI is going to play a big role in the upcoming device:

Huawei says that the Mate 10 “is not a smartphone” but rather “an intelligent machine.” Then it proceeds, “This sees, thinks, learns like us [and] for us.” On one hand, I can’t wait to see what Huawei has in store for us. My guess is that the AI here is mainly referring to the Neural Processing Unit that the company has been talking about and photography-related features (Apple seems to be taking a similar approach). On the other hand, however, I’m a little creeped out by the fact that I’m so excited for a phone that’s going to “think for me.”
