The Walking Dead: March To War bring the zombie conflict to Android

There are already a number of mobile games based on popular The Walking Dead franchise that you can play right now on your phone. Today a new entry made its official worldwide debut for Android in the Google Play Store.
The Walking Dead: March to War is based mostly on the comic book version of the zombie-themed series, but it centers on the story arc that’s currently unfolding in the AMC TV show adaptation.

The game is set in and around Washington DC, but also features the fictional locations of Sanctuary and the Hilltop. Developed by Disruptor Beam, this is a multiplayer-oriented top-down strategy game, where players not only have to defend themselves against Walkers, but also have to build up and supply their bases, and keep them intact from both zombie and human attacks.

You also have to train your group of survivors and you can even recruit the well-known characters from The Walking Dead comics, such as Rick Grimes and even Negan, with his trusty barbed wire bat Lucille, to join your team. The free-to-play game does include in-app purchases, so be aware of that before you download.
The flood of Walking Dead mobile games will continue later this year. The upcoming The Walking Dead: Our World title will be an AR game where you will shoot and cut zombies in real locations by seeing them on your smartphone.

T-Mobile set to show off its next Uncarrier moves on September 6

From killing off contracts and bringing back unlimited data plans to a rewards program, T-Mobile‘s Uncarrier events tend to include some sort of significant progression for the magenta-colored carrier. That trend looks to continue with T-Mobile’s upcoming Uncarrier Next event, which the magenta-colored carrier with a predictably-vague teaser video.
The video did not say much of anything about what the event might entail, but rumors peg a program that will reduce the prices of flagship smartphones like the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and LG V30, among others. It will reportedly replace T-Mobile’s JUMP! program and target those who pay for a smartphone outright.

There are also rumors that T-Mobile will launch a self-branded flagship smartphone, which itself is rumored to be part of the carrier’s Revvl series. T-Mobile already announced the Revvl, which mainly sticks to the low-end, and our sources emphasized that two more powerful Revvl devices are in the works, so an unveiling at Uncarrier Next is not outside the realm of possibility.

Even if the Uncarrier Next event does not amount to much, T-Mobile has already had a busy 2017. The carrier succeeded in purchasing the 600 Mhz spectrum that should appreciably expand its US coverage, with the recently-announced V30 the first phone to support the new network.
Still, we will keep close tabs on Uncarrier Next and report back with all the bits. The event is slated to kick off on Wednesday, September 6 at 8:00am PST (11:00am EST).

Google encourages developers to make standalone Android Wear apps

One of Android Wear 2.0‘s marquee features is its support for standalone apps. This eliminates the need to constantly have your phone nearby to send data to your smartwatch apps, since they can now function like your typical smartphone app. As nice as standalone apps are, they remained exclusive to Android Wear 2.0 until today, when Google announced that standalone apps also work with Android Wear 1.0.
Diving into the policy change requires a bit of context, which is where multi-APKs come in. In short, they enable standalone watch apps and faces to exist because they separate an Android Wear app from its corresponding smartphone app. Not only do multi-APKs allow developers to create standalone watch apps, but also allow iOS users to experience Android Wear apps – keep in mind that Android Wear watches can connect to iPhones.

As such, the policy change that allows developers can now use multi-APKs for Android Wear 1.0 watches means that the feature is no longer exclusive to Android Wear 2.0. It also means that Google wants as many standalone Android Wear apps in as many places as possible, particularly when it comes to reaching iOS folks:
This is critical to providing apps not only to our Android users, but also iOS users – which is increasingly important as we continue to expand our diverse ecosystem of watches and users.
As for the actual policy, Google’s push for developers to unbundle their Android Wear APKs from their mobile apps will start on January 18, 2018. This includes watch faces and complication data providers. Once developers do so, their apps will have the “Enhanced for Android Wear” badge on the Play Store.

YouTube TV adds 12 more new US cities, brings total to 27

We were pretty happy with YouTube TV when we first checked it out, but one of the service’s more glaring problems when it launched was availability, or lack thereof. As such, it comes as welcome news that Google has brought its cord-cutting service to 12 more markets in the US.

The new cities include Cleveland, Denver, Greensboro, Harrisburg, Hartford, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Milwaukee, Oklahoma City, Salt Lake City, San Diego, and St. Louis. They join the previous YouTube TV markets of  Atlanta, Charlotte, Dallas-Fort Worth, Detroit, Houston, Miami-Fort Lauderdale, Minneapolis-Saint Paul, Orlando-Daytona Beach-Melbourne, Phoenix, Washington D.C., Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, Philadelphia, and San Francisco.
As a quick refresher, YouTube TV lets you watch live and recorded content in any of the aforementioned cities. So long as you are signed in with your Google account, as well as able to pay at least $35 a month, you are good to go. It currently features 57 channels, though the availability of some will depend on your zip code.
When we first took a look at the service, we thought it was a great start for Google, albeit one that needed some ironing out in a few spots. One of those spots is where you can watch YouTube TV, though it seems that Google takes availability seriously. As such, make sure to check back from time to time as we will continually update this page whenever the service gets wider availability.

T-Mobile Hosting Uncarrier NEXT Event on September 6

t-mobile tmobile uncarrier nextT-Mobile’s last Uncarrier NEXT event was at CES this year, but today, a new NEXT event has been scheduled for September 6 (next Wednesday).
Even though the carrier posted up a hype trailer and gave us dates, we don’t quite have an idea of what they will announce. At the last event, T-Mobile introduced ONE plans, KickBack, and flat rate pricing. All of that stuff is still relevant if you’re a T-Mobile customer, so we expect whatever they announce to be a pretty big deal if you’re an existing customer or were thinking of making a switch.
Any guesses on what we should expect on September 6?

Harman unveils Alexa- and Google Assistant-powered speakers

Harman
The Harman Kardon Allure is a humidifier-looking speaker powered by Alexa, and the JBL Link series harbors Google Assistant.

Harman may be a Samsung company now, as it kindly points out on the official website, but I suppose that doesn’t mean its speakers can’t be friends with Bixby’s rivals: Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. At IFA, the international audio company has announced four new connected speakers, all of which can stream music, tell you the weather, and more with the help of either Alexa or Google Assistant.
Alexa-powered Allure
Let’s start with the Harmon Kardon Allure, the company’s first-ever smart speaker to be powered by Alexa (pictured above). It comes with four microphones with far-field voice detection technology, 360-degree sound, Bluetooth connectivity, and a bizarre-looking 360-degree ambient lighting design. Though the speaker is powered by Alexa, who already boasts having more than 20,000 skills, its design – at least for me – is underwhelming at best. Unlike the Cortana-powered Invoke, which is set to be released later in the year, the Allure looks like a mini humidifier with its translucent plastic-looking top. The asking price isn’t too attractive either: the Allure will be available this winter for $249.95 in the US.
Google Assistant-powered Link

The Link 10 and 20 speakers are designed to be highly portable with 5 to 10 hours of battery life as well as IPX7 water-resistance.
As for Google Assistant’s new home, it’s a slightly different story. Harman’s subsidiary JBL is behind the brand-new Link line-up, and you can say, “OK, Google” in order to activate Google’s AI in all three speakers: Link 10, Link 20, and Link 300. JBL says that all three models “give consumers rich, full-range sound and instant access to their favorite music through voice control.” The Link 10 and 20 speakers are designed to be highly portable with 5 to 10 hours of battery life as well as IPX7 water-resistance; that’s better than the just-announced Sony LF-S50G. The Link 300, on the other hand, is meant to be a stationary speaker. The Link 5, 10, and 300 will be available this fall for $149, $199, and $249 respectively.
With Google’s recent announcement of expanding its AI assistant to third party speakers, it seems Google Assistant will find even more new homes in the coming months. The same is true for Alexa, but the question is, “Are consumers ready to pay a premium for brand-name speakers that offer the exact same connected capabilities as Google and Amazon’s very own?”
At any rate, with the introduction of the Allure and Link speakers, Harman now has a full line-up of speakers powered by three different AI assistants. It’s probably safe to say that the company won’t ever add Siri to that list, but given that it’s now wholly-owned by Samsung, it wouldn’t be surprising to see a Bixby-powered Harman speaker in the near future.

Moto X4 hands-on – the center of your mobile disco

Motorola may have already introduced a ton of new phones this year, but the company thinks the time is ripe for yet another device. Today at IFA 2017, the Lenovo-owned company announced a new addition to the incredibly popular Moto X range, but this one takes the X series in a different direction. Join us as we go hands-on with the Moto X4.

Before we start, let’s try to answer something that’s probably on many folks’ minds. Where does the Moto X4 fit into the company’s confusing lineup? While the Moto X lineup used to be considered Motorola’s flagship smartphone line, the new X4 now sits squarely in between the high-end Moto Z2 line and the mid-range Moto G line.

The Moto X4 packs a 5.2-inch Full HD display, measures 7.99 mm thin and weighs in at 163 grams. It’s also powered by a Snapdragon 630 with either 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage, or 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage depending on your market.
You’ll find the fingerprint sensor beneath the display and the power and volume keys to the right. The rear has a sleek, contoured design that shimmers in the light, along with a dual camera array that looks very similar to the Moto Z2 Force in design.

The main camera features a 12 MP sensor with dual autofocus, f/2.0 aperture, and 1.4 µm pixel size, while the secondary camera is an 8 MP ultra-wide sensor with f/2.2 aperture, 1.12 µm pixel size, and 120-degree field of view. Motorola’s Depth Detection feature allows you to add bokeh and depth of field effects to your photos, although we have not had very long to test this feature out quite yet.

The handset is powered by a 3,000 mAh battery which is accompanied by Motorola’s Turbo Charge technology to help get you back up and running when your battery runs low. What’s more, it comes with IP68 dust and water resistance to help protect you if things do go wrong. Motorola has also brought Amazon’s Alexa to the device.

So far, we’ve basically been rattling off specs that you can find in many other mid-tier handsets. But the X4 does stand out thanks to one new feature: a new Wireless Sound System that’s powered by French startup Tempow which allows your phone to truly become the centerpiece of your very own mobile disco.
There is one standout feature that allows your phone to truly become the centerpiece of your very own mobile disco
Utilizing the hardware stack and system access, Tempow’s software allows you to play music simultaneously on up to four Bluetooth-powered devices. The software is baked into the OS on the Moto X4, which means it connects and streams to any Bluetooth device, new or old, as long as it has the A2DP music profile or equivalent.
Moto X4 hands-on
For those who want to listen to audio on multiple devices at once, the Moto X4 could be the phone for you

Thanks to the company working directly with Motorola, Tempow has been able to add custom shortcuts to the settings menu. In the phone’s settings, you’ll find the ability to set speakers as the left, right, or both channels, as well as the ability to tweak audio profiles on a per-device basis. When you adjust the volume via the phone’s volume button, there’s also an option to adjust the volume for each connected device. Why would you want to do this? Maybe you want to have a bass-heavy speaker lower than a pair of headphones that prioritizes the mids and the highs.
For those who want to listen to audio on multiple devices at once, the Moto X4 could be the phone for you. Tempow is actually in talks to partner with other manufacturers in the near future, too, as it requires system access and swapping out of drivers. The company doesn’t plan to launch the feature as a standalone app, at least not for now.

Tempow partnership aside, the Moto X4 is a phone that blends into the crowd a little too much. It’s not the most unique looking device on the market, though the wireless surround system is a feature that’s not on any other device, at least for now. Simply put, Tempow is the best feature in an otherwise unexciting phone.
